Bars and Cafes in Siem reap

Siem Reap has a wide variety of bars and cafes, ranging from guesthouse bars with cheap beer to first-rate cocktail lounges. Most bars and restaurants are located on or around Pub Street, in the center of town, near the Old Market. However, cheaper and less touristy drinking places can be found throughout the city. Unlike Thailand, Cambodia doesn’t currently have any time restriction on selling alcohol. Bars in Siem Reap usually open late in the afternoon and close at about 4-6AM. Be careful when ordering drinks in Cambodia, since beer is sometimes watered down. Always ask the waiter to open the bottle at your table.

Here is a selection of the most popular or interesting bars and lounges in Siem Reap:

    * Angkor What: was the first bar to open in Pub Street in the late nineties. It offers cheap Cambodian beers as well as more expensive imports, food and cocktails.
    * The Elephant Bar is an expensive but exquisite café located on the ground floor of the Raffles Grand Hotel. Cocktails and expensive wine are served here in a charming colonial setting. Definitely not recommended for budget travelers, but this is a great place to spend a couple of hours in if you can afford it.
    * The Island Bar is one of the newest additions to the Siem Reap bar scene. It is located at the back of the Angkor Night Market and it has a nice selection of draft beers as well as cocktails and fusion food. Live music is also regularly played there.
    * Le Tigre de Papier is a bar owned by a French expatriate. It is located in the middle of Pub Street and offers a nice choice of local or French drinks as well as quality European food. A second-hand bookshop is also available on the second floor.
    * Linga Bar is one of the few gay-friendly bars in Siem Reap. Straight and gay party animals meet here every night to enjoy delicious cocktails or wine in a very modern setting. Definitely one of the most fun bars in Siem Reap.
    * Temple Club, on Pub Street, is probably the most popular bar in Siem Reap. In addition to drinking cheap beer and listening to dance tunes mixed by a live DJ, you can also play pool or darts while munching on a wide selection of snacks. Most days of the week, and especially on the weekends, Temple Club closes at dawn.

Siem Reap bars and clubs

Most of the liveliest bars in Siem Reap are located on Pub Street, which can be found near the Old Market. Two of the most popular venues here are Buddha Bar and Angkor What? Both of these establishments attract people from all over the world, pumping out Western hits from the last three decades and providing plenty of space to shake a tail feather. Those who are feeling a little homesick will find a number of Western-themed bars and pubs in Siem Reap, and one of the most popular is Molly Malone’s which is located at the very end of Pub Street. Featuring wooden floors, Irish décor and an excellent selection of home cooked Irish meals, this is a great place to unwind for a while.

Expats should check out Ivy by the Old Market for cold drinks and a good chat with likeminded folk. Free pool and chilled local beer for US1$ maintains this place in people’s hearts. Down a small side street to the north west of Ivy is Linga Bar which features an extensive cocktail list and a gay-friendly ambience.

In the same area is Zone One which is arguably the most popular disco in Siem Reap, pumping out generic Western rock and pop plus some unique Khmer hip hop for local revellers.

Also located on Bar Street, The Temple Club offers a complimentary show of traditional Khmer dancing each night. Those who enjoy sipping brightly coloured cocktails will feel right at home in venues such as Red Piano, while Martini Club is the perfect place for letting loose on the dance floor, gyrating to hip-hop tunes spun by local DJs.

Another good place to get into the groove is the Wayfarer’s Pub, which is located inside the Sofitel Royal Angkor Golf & Spa Resort. Open until the early hours of the morning, nightly entertainment is provided by the house DJ and the 15:00 to midnight happy hour is sure to put visitors into the dancing spirit.

The Dead Fish Tower is a recommended Siem Reap bar on Sivatha Street with multiple levels, wacky décor and live music. The kitchen serves up some great food which brings punters back time after time.

While there are no official go-go bars in Siem Reap or the rest of Cambodia for that matter, there is still a naughtier side to the nightlife here for those who need to let off a little steam.

It’s worth noting that although there is always somewhere to party, most bars, restaurants and nightclubs close by 3:00, and it is best to avoid travelling alone on the streets after this time, although Siem Reap is a safe place to spend time.
